A wonderful addition to your reading list!

The Captive MaidenDISCLAIMER: Parents should read the following post before they allow their children to read it.

Recently I read and reviewed The Captive Maiden by Melanie Dickerson.

And I’m here to tell you that this book would be a wonderful addition to your reading list. Or rather, your daughters’ reading lists!

One of our most difficult jobs as parents is to help them chose the right reading material.

We want our children to enjoy reading and experience the wonder of imagination but we also want to make sure they aren’t confused or upset by what they read. It’s a fine line to walk.

For myself – I know that I have been hesitant to push the more traditional version of popular fairy tales. We made the decision long ago as a family to be as honest with each other as possible. That means we don’t pretend that “magic” (as the world sees it anyway) is real.

We believe in a supernatural God and we believe that he does supernatural things but if it’s not of God, it’s not something we embrace.

No Santa or Easter Bunny for us – unless you count the chocolate kind, that is.
(The reason I stated above that Parents should read the post first)

The Captive Maiden tells the story of Cinderella with a firm foundation in faith, embracing God and leaving the hokey magic from the traditional story out.

BRAVO Melanie Dickerson! GREAT JOB! And a GREAT BOOK too!

There are several others as well and, while I haven’t read them yet, I plan to – soon! And I feel confident in saying that – if they’re anything like The Captive Maiden, they’ll be wonderful!

The Healer's Apprentice The Healer’s Apprentice
The Merchant's Daughter The Merchant’s Daughter
The Fairest Beauty The Fairest Beauty

And I just discovered there is another book slated for release later this year!

What is in God’s Word? # 1: Why does equal have to mean “exactly” the same?

1606986_430219043748235_1965803363_nI posted the below message on Facebook about a week ago with this picture (The picture was a share from Growing Home)

I think this may be where the whole thing about women being equal to men came from – The point that we were made from his side to be equal to him…
One thing I never understood is this: Why does equal have to mean “exactly” the same.
4+1 = 2+3
They come out to the same thing but they get there a different way. They look the same. They’ll add up or subtract just as easily and they can both be flipped one way or the other but they are different.
Men and Women are different.
I don’t know about you but I would MUCH rather have a man who respects me (pays for dinner/movie with NO expectations) and romances me (opens doors for me and lets me go through first, buys flowers/chocolates for no other reason that “just because”) than a job where I make the same $$ as the guy next to me. Of course that’s all moot for me anyway because I’m one of the weird moms who actually enjoys staying at home with her children and WANTS to be a wife and mother before I want to be ANYTHING else.

Since this is my blog and blogs are meant to be expanded a bit, I will expand on this thought here.

Years ago, someone decided that men and women are equal and they should be treated equally. I have several problems with this basic concept but I’ll get into those later on…

First let me continue with the question: “Why does equal have to mean EXACTLY the same?”

And this gets a bit into my problem with the basic concept anyway…

Above I pointed out that you have 2+3 and they equal the same thing as 4+1. The equations themselves are vastly different however they both come out to the same thing. You can flip them around (2+3 = 1+4) (3+2 = 4+1) (3+2 = 1+4) (2+3 = 4+1) (1+4 = 2+3) (4+1 = 3+2) (4+1 = 2+3) ( 1+4 = 3+2) many different ways and they will ALWAYS come out to the same thing.

Any combination of 2+3 and 4+1 will equal 5. It’s a mathematical certainty. People are the same way. A woman who wears glasses is no less a woman than one who doesn’t. A man who wears a hearing aid is no less a man than another who doesn’t. A man with blue eyes sees things around him in the same way as the man with brown eyes and a woman who is 5 feet tall still stands the same as a woman who is eight inches taller. Being shorter does not make her less of a woman – unless we’re judging volume of course. (Hey… that was a joke)

Anyway, I guess I better get to the point.

The point being that boys and girls are different. And that’s NOT a bad thing.

It’s a good thing.

God made us that way. And that’s how He means for us to be. He has a specific plan for us and it works out best for everyone if we accept it and follow God’s design.

Personally I like the sound of a Proverbs 31 woman…not just for myself, but for my sweet little boy. I want him to have the kind of woman who enjoys being a wife and mother.

Whatever happened to the Halloween I grew up with…

I used to love Halloween.

No really I did!

I used to love the magic of it all – dressing up and pretending to be someone else for a few hours, mom following along in her car while we went door to door & then driving us to a friend’s party, the delight of getting a handful of candy from one neighbor and a handmade caramel apple from another.

There’s no other holiday like it.

There’s certainly no other holiday that even remotely resembles what it has become…Thank God!

I won’t tell you to go to google and search Halloween. But I did and can you guess what I found? If you guessed pumpkins and cute little kids you’re half right. No cute little kids anywhere but pumpkins, yes. Gross, yucky, creepy, disgusting pumpkins that I would never want my children to see. ICK!

Not a cute little trick-or-treater in sight.

Lots of pictures of people who really ought not to be anywhere near children dressed that way though.

Even when I went and googled “trick-or-treaters”, I was surprised…and not pleasantly either. There were tons of pictures of kids (who couldn’t possibly be over 10) in the nastiest costumes I’ve ever seen.

What are their parents thinking?

What ever happened to good old-fashioned innocence! Well I guess the answer is in the question. It’s too “old-fashioned”! It went out with respect and people standing up and taking responsibility for their actions.

One thing about this holiday (this holiday I used to love) that absolutely floors me is how much craziness it brings out in adults. I have marveled at the comments, tweets and status updates talking about Halloween related things this past month (even a bit longer in some cases).

But what I did not expect and absolutely cannot stand is all the gross avatars, creepy new names & yucky stories being strung together across a dozen tweets. A tweet linking to a blog post with the yucky story I could handle but having to scroll past a hundred of them from several different people, never knowing what nastiness I’m about to read as I scan tweets and having to look at nasty pics every time these people post is enough. More than enough in fact.

Which is why I have chosen to unfollow people who’ve participated in this nonsense.

A person can only take so much!

I have worked so hard to weed these type of influences out of my life. To be slapped in the face with them every time I open Facebook or twitter is just too much.

So I will happily let go of Halloween. I’ve put it to rest. I don’t even need a mourning period.

But I will say Happy Fall!
And God Bless!

Calling All the Monsters (Reblogged)

Reblogged from A Homeschool Mom:

FYI – This is a personal rant. Read on and chime in; this will definitely prove to be a whopper of a conversation!

My girls and I recently had the privilege of attending a little girl’s birthday party. Things went as most parties usually go, but the presents were a little… hmm… odd? Well, odd for me, at least.

It seems our little friend is into ”

This is a sensitive subject for me as well. I feel it is vital to teach our children not only that these things should be avoided but WHY!
If your children don’t know WHY something is wrong, unhealthy or unGodly, how can they make an informed decision?
Parents: TEACH your children!
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” – Philippians 4:8

A view of Miley Cyrus’s latest behavior that may not be very popular.

Philippians 4 8

I have been sitting on this opinion for days but it feels more and more important that people who have a valid point, should make theirs known.

Disclaimer: I will not be posting any pictures of Miley’s recent performance so if you came here looking for that, you’ll probably be going now.

I read a blog post this morning that condoned and applauded Miley Cyrus for her recent behavior and I feel compelled to respond. Before anyone goes off half-cocked, the author of said blog post has already conceded that the behavior was questionable. She was merely condoning Miley’s right, as a woman, to do such a thing.

I would like to address this point first.
It is my belief that many people in this world today have lost the meaning behind the different roles of men and women in the world, in society and in life. One of the problems is, I’m certain, the devil himself. He is the father of lies and the master of confusion. And the more he can confuse people in general, the easier his work becomes. However one of the problems is most definitely the different translations of the bible. I realize that the Olde English is not easy for everyone. In fact, it’s not always easy for me. However, the Authorized King James Translation was taken upon very seriously. And it took years… yes years for them to translate the original languages into one. This was not because of a lack in technology or resources but due to the fact that every single verse was painstakingly studied by multiple translators. They wanted to make sure they got it RIGHT.

Proverbs 31:26-31 ESV:
She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. …

Proverbs 31: 26-31 KJV:
26 She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. 27 She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. 28 Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. 29 Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. 30 Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

I could spend all day on every nuance that has been missed here. But I won’t. If you look, REALLY look, you can see what has been missed and what has been incorrectly translated.

So back to the point at hand.

Why do I consider Miley Cyrus’s behavior completely inappropriate, lewd, disgusting and an affront to all things good and decent in this world?

I do not care one single solitary bit that she is a young woman doing these things. I would be JUST AS disgusted by a man behaving this way. But our society has been exposed to these sorts of things so much, we can’t even see it for what it really is: one more step toward desensitization to true evil.

Yes, the Smith family was shocked. Yes, millions of people have commented negatively. But think of this. Does Twitter care? Does Google care? Does Facebook care? Does MTV care?

They care about likes, page views, tweets, ratings. They care about how many people watched it live, watched it later on YouTube, how many people are talking about it, tweeting about it, texting about it, liking pages talking about it. Facebook, Google, Twitter and MTV are doing a happy dance right now because this subject is on everybody’s pages and unfortunately in their mouths and minds.

Eventually, all anyone will remember about it is how controversial it was.

I miss the days when Miley skipping out on an event in New York City (Hannah Montana: The Movie) was the biggest concern on anybody’s mind. I miss the days when it was shocking to see Miley in all black with a frown perpetually on her face (The Last Song). I miss the days when she sang a duet with John Travolta (Bolt) and that was the biggest, most exciting thing she’d ever done!

I miss the days when young people got to be young people. The days when we didn’t encourage our children to grow up so fast AND to do it in front of the world via social media. I’m still working on this with my two young children. We do not have cable. We do not have Internet (except on our phones and we have ABSOLUTE control over those AT ALL TIMES). We feel it is more important to give the children time to play, time to read, time to BE children!

Parental controls may be fine for some people but more and more things are becoming “PG” or “PG-13” that I do NOT want my young children seeing… EVER if I can help it. And this latest experience is another one of them. It aired LIVE on MTV, a channel that almost every cable carrier supplies as part of a basic package. How many young children saw this that night? Can they ever get those images out of their head? Will they ever be able to think of Miley Cyrus again without going back to that event in their mind?

Colossians 3 2

No. And neither will I unfortunately. And not because I watched it on TV or even on YouTube but because I clicked on a link for an article speaking against her behavior. I didn’t for one second think there would be a picture there. I was wrong.
