Things I have learned about reading, about life, about me Part 3 of 3

Teach-Love

If you have not read PART 1 and PART 2 of this article, you may want to go do that first.

This article is written in three parts and they are meant to be read in order. But you’re welcome to be a rebel and read this part first. Or you can read PART 2 first. Whatever floats your boat.

Things I have learned Part 3

I never pictured myself as a teacher. I never had the patience to teach young children — as a young woman. As a mother, I discovered patience I never knew I had. I discovered that I could teach my own children. And it took me a long time but I finally realized that I was teaching them already.

We decided on homeschooling for many reasons. One of them was my feeling that the children’s creativity might be stifled in such a busy environment where they would receive so little personal attention. Another was due to the tremendous amount of energy my son has always had. He moves so quickly from one thing to the next, I knew he would be easily bored in a classroom with twenty or thirty other students. I also felt it was important to teach them in a God-centered atmosphere. Since God is not welcome in public schools and most private schools are catholic (and we are not) homeschool was the best option.

There were many other reasons.

But I’m sure you don’t want to hear me list them all. It would take all day for you to read the article.

However, one of the bonuses of home-schooling is that I get to make reading a very important part of it. My son loves to read as much as I do . . . maybe even more. We’ve chosen curriculum that focuses on reading. He reads for enjoyment, not just for assignments. He has that luxury at home. My daughter is new to reading but she is picking it up very quickly and she already enjoys reading books at her level for fun!

We also spend a lot of time at the local library. Both children enjoy this so much they beg to go to the library almost every day. I enjoy the chance to sit in a room, surrounded by books — watching my children enjoy the world of reading as much as I do.

It’s exciting and rewarding.

Books are the best thing we can pass on to our children. There are whole worlds inside that wait to be explored.

Give your children the gift of reading.

Teach them, whether they are homeschooled or go to public or private school, to love books. Teach them to love reading. The possibilities that exist with reading are endless, boundless and unimaginable!

READ! WRITE! TEACH! LEARN! LIVE!
