Balanced Challenge Day 11 | March 21: Refresh (Chapter 11)

Day 11: Refresh (Chapter Eleven)

Don’t think balance will happen overnight—or even over an eleven-day challenge. It takes practice, and practice takes time. Spend a few minutes reviewing what you’ve learned throughout this challenge and what you hope to continue implementing in your life. Then blog about how you can keep persevering and working toward balance after the challenge has ended. Share encouragement for those who might feel they’ve failed at balance.

What can I say about this chapter?

How can I continue to implement these in my life?

Well, what I do every time I worry about not succeeding. KEEP TRYING!

PRAY! READ my Bible! Continue to give God my burdens. He can hold them so much better than I can! LOVE my family! READ more about these subjects and continue to seek out new information and suggestions! NEVER stop writing!

What do you think?

Do you need more Balance in your life? Would you consider implementing these suggestions into your own life? Would you tell us about it?

Balanced Challenge Day 10 | March 20: Eight (Chapter Ten)

Day 10: Eight (Chapter Ten)

Read chapter ten and come up with your list of “eight.” Then write down those eight themes on a pretty piece of paper and post it somewhere you’ll see it often (bathroom mirror, refrigerator, bulletin board, etc.).

Well these won’t last long around here…

The kiddos are really great at pulling down inspirational messages I leave for myself. But I’m willing to give it a try.

•  Following God’s plans for our lives
•  Letting God’s word lead my thoughts, my words and my actions
•  Giving my Children a true LOVE of God!
•  Finding the courage to present my work to the world
•  Teach! Write! Learn! Live! LOVE!
•  Stop worrying about my past! GOD has forgiven me!
•  Finding hope in God’s Word!
•  Holding my family close and treasuring every moment I have with them!

What are your 8?

Do you need more Balance in your life? Would you consider implementing these suggestions into your own life? Would you tell us about it?

Balanced Challenge Day 9 | March 19: Inspiration and Relaxation (Chapter Nine)

Day 9: Inspiration and Relaxation (Chapter Nine)

Give your mind a rest and a dose of good, old-fashioned inspiration. Carve out some time today to implement one of my tips about finding inspiration and enjoy the feeling of creativity. Then come up with your own list of ways you can find inspiration and share those on your blog.

The inspiration part I usually don’t have any trouble with.

But the relaxation – For me, even when we take our yearly trek to Myrtle Beach, I don’t fully relax. I have two kids to keep up with at a beach. Who could relax? But I really LOVE Tricia’s suggestions here. I plan to try each one of them at some point or other in the future. Might be fun to take them in turns until I figure out which ones work for me.

I might even come back later and have a list I’ve come up with myself.

Do you need more Balance in your life? Would you consider implementing these suggestions into your own life? Would you tell us about it?

Balanced Challenge Day 8 | March 18: (Chapter Eight)

Day 8: Make Today Amazing (Chapter Eight)

Take one of my tips to make today amazing (toward the end of the chapter in Balanced) and implement it today. Did you notice a difference in your attitude? What changed? Blog about it!

Which one did I do today?

All of them. Well, almost all of them. I’m a single mom so I don’t have a husband but I hugged MOM and my kiddos! And, at the moment there aren’t any clothes I can give away but I’m working on that too!

I don’t always remember to read the Bible but we’re doing better with it this year than ever before. I work really hard to Thank God every day for the many many blessings he has bestowed on my family!

And the relaxing… well – that’s my reading time!

Balanced Challenge Day 7 | March 17: Teamwork (Chapter Seven)

Day 7: Teamwork (Chapter Seven)

Many hands make light work—and moms, you shouldn’t feel the need to do everything yourself. Schedule a quick family meeting today to talk to your kids and spouse about the responsibilities you all can share to make your load a bit lighter. Blog about what task was given to whom.

We have been working on this one!

I admit I am not great with it. For too many years, I was the one who did everything around the house – Mom worked so I did most of the cooking, cleaning and wrangling my brother. The role has shifted slightly but really not that much. Mom still works. I take care of the house, the cooking and I wrangle the kiddos. Throw in home-schooling, writing, running errands and helping Mom when she’s home and it makes for a busy day.

And trust me when I say, I tried having the munchkins help out when they were little. It was nice to have help but it almost always took three times as long to get anything done and since, like I jokingly say about mom, I have very little patience – I tend to let them go play and do it all myself.

Thankfully the kiddos are getting older and they’re starting to help out more and more…when I let them. 🙂

Balanced Challenge Day 6 | March 16: Do What You Can (Chapter Six)

Day 6: Do What You Can (Chapter Six)

Do you have an extra fifteen minutes before you need to hop in the car to pick up your kids? Make the most of them! Do a little laundry, organize a stack of papers, do a quick sweep of the kitchen. Those five, ten, and fifteen minutes add up throughout the day! Take advantage of them today and write about your experience and all you got done in today’s blog post.

Now this is one area I AM good at!

I am the master at the “last-minute clean”. I excel at fitting things into places no one else would think they could fit! I am fantastic at planning trips so that we don’t backtrack too much. I think of where we need to go that day and I fit things in along the route.

It stems from a very tight budget but it also stems from a busy lifestyle.

Unfortunately, since I am not great at scheduling time, it also means I’m late a lot so that part needs some work.

Balanced Challenge Day 5| March 15: Rank These Priorities (Chapter Five)

Get Balanced!

Day 5: Rank Those Priorities (Chapter Five)

At the end of chapter five, there’s a ranking system to help you form your calendar before you fill it. Using the ranking system, revamp your calendar, then take a picture of it to post on your blog. Write a few sentences about what you’re giving up to fill instead with what’s truly important.

This one is a bit tricky for me.

I have never been good at making a calendar and sticking to it. Last year for Christmas, Mom bought me an iPhone. It has taken months for me to really start using the calendar feature. And, to be honest, most of what is there are the blog tour dates for the books I review and the date my post is supposed to go up. Otherwise, Mom uses texts to remind me of things I need to get done throughout the day.

I lean on her so much for so many little things. I seriously could not get everything I do manage to get done, accomplished without her. She is the organizer in our family. She is the planner and she is my go-to for so much.

It’s definitely an area I need to work on.

Balanced Challenge Day 4| March 14: Believing God (Chapter Four)

Get Balanced!

Day 4: Believing God (Chapter Four)

What have you been called by God to do? Take a few minutes away from work and family to sit with your Bible and talk to God. Believe that God placed your dreams and passions in your heart. Find a verse that speaks to you about this, and post it today on your blog.

I have actually spent a lot of time pondering this lately.

My mom tells me God has gifted me with an amazing ability to write. My kids tell me they’re blessed to have me as a mom. My mom and my kids tell me I’m doing exactly what God wants me to do by home-schooling.

I feel compelled to write. I feel compelled home-school. I am a mom (I don’t believe that is a calling – it’s a gift) But I also try to listen daily to God’s voice (through the spirit). I haven’t always been the best at listening and I haven’t always obeyed even when I have heard but I am trying daily now to do both.

I am blessed to have such an amazing family! They encourage me and they work alongside me to get closer to God.

My son is a prophet (spiritual gift) and he never hesitates to let me know when I need to work on something (IN LOVE) and he is the first one I go to when I’m not sure which side of the line a book or a movie falls. He’s very quick to tell me whether it’s appropriate or not.

Balanced Challenge Day 3| March 13: Get Your Kids Involved (Chapter Three)

Day 3: Get Your Kids Involved (Chapter Three)

How can you get your kids involved in what you’re working on? How can they experience what your job is like and contribute to it? For me, that meant allowing my kids to come with me on research trips or to meet people I was interviewing. Write a blog post about different ways you can involve your kids in your job, then stop by others’ blogs to see if you can use their ideas with this task!

My kids are already VERY INVOLVED!

They spend a lot of time each day asking me how many words I have, giving me ideas about things to add in (some of them are a little silly but they are 7 and 10) and telling me I can do it – when I want to quit.

They are my BEST cheerleaders!

I am also blessed to have an amazing mom! (I think I mentioned that before) She encourages me so much and I couldn’t do any of this without her! No she’s not one of the kids but she can’t be left out of the important area of how my family encourages me!

Currently, I don’t get a whole lot of writing done every day but if I get a thousand words a day, I’m happy. And no, I don’t always get a thousand words a day. But I’m  mom. I’m busy.

The kiddos help with that too. If I haven’t reached my target count for the day, they tend to turn into little task-masters and give me “that look” until I get going again.

GOD BLESS THEM! I couldn’t do any of it without them!

Balanced Challenge Day 2| March 12: Your Work (Chapter Two)

Day 2: Your Work (Chapter Two)

What can you do or change to make working from home actually work for you? Creating an office space? Cleaning up that office space? Looking into finding a babysitter for a few hours a day? Take the first steps in making the change, then take a photo of your progress and post it on your blog.

This challenge is A LOT different for me than it has been for Tricia!

Why? I am a single mom.

I am blessed to have an amazing mom! She wants what I want, for the children to be home-schooled, grow in a wholesome, nurturing environment and to have unlimited access to their own mom.

We are only given a few short years with our children and I have never understood why so many people insist on wasting those years on such silly things. I value every minute I have with my children!

Now don’t get the wrong idea. They do not follow my every footstep throughout our home all day. We spend time together as we do school, as we eat meals and as we do Bible study. Other than that, we try to go outside every day and they ride bikes/ scooters while I walk – usually while talking to Mom while she is on her lunch break at work.

They have their own play room and they spend a lot of time in it. They also spend a lot of time running back and forth between the play room and the living room – where I camp out on my laptop while they’re playing.

I don’t get a lot of writing done this way but I do get some and that’s enough for me. My hope is that, one day I can make enough money writing, that Mom can retire and stay at home while I work from home and we can all have more time to spend together. Of course then, I will need to find some way to make a more specific time frame where I write and get things done online. But I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I may be revisiting this challenge then to see how it can help me implement a good schedule, once I have more demands on my time. (God-willing)
